Our picturesque town was grounded by the Commander of the Kulmerland – Otto von Lautenberg in 1325. The town is located in the valley of the Drwęca River, it is surrounded with fortifications, a system of towers and gates as well as a double moat. It was one of the best fortified towns of the Teutonic Order.
The Nowe Miasto Lubawskie with its 12 thousand residents has maintained the structure of a medieval city and has maintained numerous gothic structures and buildings and most valuable historical monuments. The most significant of those structures is the St. Thomas the Apostle parish church from the 14th century. The interiors of the church constitute a unique mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque arts and crafts. Gothic paintings in the oldest part of the presbytery depicting the saints' figures are particularly interesting. Wall paintings from the first half of the 17th century are the largest group of such decorations in Poland – they cover all the walls and the whole ceiling of the sanctuary.
Another extremely valuable historical structure of the church is the brass tombstone of Kuno von Liebenstein, which was founded by the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights, Konrad von Jungingen.
The most valuable monuments that may be found in our city include wooden sculptures depicting Jesus Christ bearing the cross, Simon of Cyrene, the Holy Mother, St. Andrew and Jesus Crucified. It seems virtually impossible to name all valuable monuments of that unique sanctuary.
Numerous elements of the town’s fortifications and walls from the 14th century have also been retained in fairly good condition. The two special gates of the town draw particular attention – the Lubawska and Brodnicka gates, along with the partially preserved round tower and one of the half-shell towers.
The town offers unique landscape and cultural experience, a very welcoming atmosphere and fantastic local cuisine. In May 2010, the town of Nowe Miasto Lubawskie has joined the International association of small towns – Cittaslow, which promotes towns which offer a peaceful place to live and enjoy nature.

Nasze malownicze miasto zostało założone przez Komtura Ziemi Chełmińskiej Ottona von Lautenberga w 1325 roku. Położone w zakolu rzeki Drwęcy, otoczone murami obronnymi, systemem baszt i bram oraz podwójną fosą było w ówczesnych czasach jednym z najbardziej ufortyfikowanych miast Zakonu Krzyżackiego.
Liczące prawie 12 tys. mieszkańców Nowe Miasto Lubawskie do dziś zachowało układ średniowiecznego grodu i może poszczycić się wieloma zachowanymi gotyckimi budowlami oraz zabytkami klasy zerowej. Najokazalszym z nich jest kościół farny pod wezwaniem Św. Tomasza Apostoła z XIV wieku. Wnętrze bazyliki to niesamowita mieszanka sztuki gotyckiej, renesansowej i barokowej. Na uwagę zasługują gotyckie malowidła w najstarszej części prezbiterium przedstawiające postacie świętych. Natomiast malowidła ścienne z pierwszej połowy XVII wieku należą do największego zespołu w Polsce -pokrywają one całkowicie ściany i strop świątyni.
Cennym zabytkiem kościoła jest mosiężna płyta nagrobna Kunona von Liebenstaina, którą ufundował Wielki Mistrz Zakonu Konrad von Jungingen.
Do najwyższej klasy zabytków zaliczane są gotyckie rzeźby drewniane przedstawiające figury Chrystusa dźwigającego krzyż, Szymona Cyrenejczyka, Matki Boskiej, św. Andrzeja i Chrystusa ukrzyżowanego. Nie sposób wymienić tu wszystkich cennych zabytków nowomiejskiej świątyni.
Na terenie miasta zachowały się też w niezłym stanie fragmenty murów obronnych i fortyfikacji miasta z XIV wieku. Imponująco na tle miasta wyglądają bramy Lubawska i Brodnicka, częściowo zachowana baszta okrągła i jedna z baszt łupinowych.
Dla turystów nasze miasto w swojej ofercie posiada unikalne walory przyrodnicze i kulturowe, gościnną atmosferę oraz lokalne tradycje kulinarne. W maju 2010 roku Nowe Miasto Lubawskie wstąpiło do Międzynarodowego Stowarzyszenia Miast Cittaslow, promującego miejsca spokojnego życia w zgodzie z naturą.
